PlainScan privacy policy

Last updated November 4, 2026 (text recognition languages)

This policy covers the PlainScan Android app (“PlainScan”), a document scanner. In short: PlainScan does not collect, sell or share any data. It has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. The app does not even have permission to use the internet.

Information the app handles

All of this stays on your phone, in the app's private storage. None of it is ever sent to the developer or anyone else.

Camera and scanning

The scanning screen (camera, edge detection and cleanup) is provided by Google Play services on your phone through the ML Kit Document Scanner. Images are processed on the device and handed back to PlainScan. Google Play services is part of your phone's system software and operates under Google's privacy policy. Because the camera runs inside Google Play services, PlainScan itself does not request the camera permission.

Text recognition

Text is read on your device. The model for Latin script and Chinese is bundled inside the app. If you use Japanese, Korean or Devanagari text recognition, Google Play services downloads that model to your phone the first time it is needed; PlainScan itself still makes no network requests. Your scans and their text are never uploaded.

Sharing

Scans leave your phone only when you choose to share, save or print them, and only to the app or place you pick.

Storage and deletion

Deleting a document in the app deletes its files. Uninstalling the app removes all its data. Since we never receive your data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.

What we don't do

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
