PlainWiFi shows the Wi-Fi around you and says, in a full sentence, what is worth changing. It opens on your networks. The guide is how to find the least crowded Wi-Fi channel.

What it does

  • Lists every nearby network with signal strength, channel, band, channel width, security, and Wi-Fi generation (Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6, 6E, and 7).
  • Draws a channel graph for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. Networks that are 40, 80, or 160 MHz wide are drawn at that width.
  • Recommends the least crowded channel and says whether moving the router is worth it. The listing’s example is: “Your network is on channel 6, shared with 3 others. Try channel 11.”
  • Flags DFS channels, and flags open or WEP networks.
  • Shows a live signal meter for the network you are on, updated every second, with a 60-second graph and a quality label that explains the number.
  • Records a room walk and ranks dead zones, weakest first.
  • Keeps the last scan on screen so the list does not vanish before you can read it.
  • If Android will not allow another scan yet, shows how old the results are instead of a blank list.
  • Offers a light theme and a dark theme.

Location, and what it does not do

Android only reveals Wi-Fi scan results to an app that has location access. PlainWiFi asks for that after explaining why, and it does not read or store your position. The signal meter works with no permission at all.

The app has no internet permission. Nothing it sees leaves the phone unless you export it. There are no ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no account.

PlainWiFi does not show saved Wi-Fi passwords, does not “boost” a network, and does not run a speed test. It reads what Android reports and explains it. You still change the channel in your router’s own settings.

Free, and the optional unlock

Everything in the list above is free. One optional purchase, with no subscription, adds unlimited rooms per walk (the free walk measures 3), saved walks so you can compare before and after you move the router, and CSV export of scans and walks. The Play listing does not publish a price for that purchase, so this page does not invent one.
