You can draw a measured floor plan on a phone without a CAD subscription. PlainPlan shows every wall length and room area as you go, and it saves after each change. I would still measure the room again before buying flooring or sending the drawing to a builder. The app itself says the plans are approximate.

The steps match the Play listing as of November 2026. Every tool is available from the start. There is nothing to unlock and no account.

Draw the walls

  1. Install PlainPlan. Choose metric or imperial before you get attached to a number.
  2. Drag to draw a wall. Corners join on their own, and walls snap to straight and 45° angles and line up with other corners.
  3. For a simple room, use the room tool and drag a rectangle. You get four walls and the area.
  4. Tap a wall and type the length you measured: metres, centimetres, or feet and inches.
  5. Drop in doors, double doors, sliding doors, windows, or an open passage. They snap to the wall. One tap flips the swing or the hinge.
  6. Add furniture if you are planning a layout. The library has 45 items, including beds, sofas, tables, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, stairs, desks, and a car. Resize, rotate, and label them.
  7. Pinch to zoom and pan with two fingers. Undo and redo are one step at a time. The eraser and “split a wall” are there when a corner lands in the wrong place.

Walk away in the middle. An incoming call or a switch to another app does not drop the drawing, and there is no spinner when you open it again.

Trace a plan you already have

If a listing or a paper sketch is close to the truth:

  1. Photograph it. If you also want a PDF copy of that paper, scan it with PlainScan separately. PlainPlan traces a photo, not a PDF.
  2. Put the photo under the drawing, set the scale by measuring one known distance, and lower the opacity.
  3. Draw over it. You can also rescale the whole drawing from one wall whose length you know.

Export something you can share

  • PDF at a true scale such as 1:50 or 1:100, with a scale bar and the room areas.
  • PNG, for a message.
  • DXF, for someone who will open it in CAD. On a Chromebook, DraftLens opens DXF in Chrome.
  • Print directly.

Several floors can live in one plan, one page per floor. Areas and perimeters are totaled per floor and for the whole home. The measure tool checks a distance that is not a wall.

Back the plan up as one .plan file and import that file on another phone. PlainPlan has no internet permission. There are no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. The plan leaves the phone only when you share it.
