How to fill and sign a PDF in Chrome, free
Chrome's built-in PDF viewer handles simple forms, but typing onto a PDF without form fields, or placing a clean signature you can reuse, is hard or impossible there. Many free websites can, but they upload your document and often add a watermark or ask you to sign up before you can download.
Step by step
Add FairFill to Chrome
Install FairFill from the Chrome Web Store. It's free with no account.
Open your PDF
Viewing the PDF in Chrome? Click the FairFill icon and it opens there. Or drag the file onto FairFill, or right-click a PDF link and choose “Fill & sign this PDF with FairFill”.
Fill it in
Click a form field and type. On PDFs without fields, pick the Text tool and click where you want to write. Add the date, checkmarks or crosses with one click.
Sign
Click Sign, then draw with your mouse or finger, type your name in a handwriting font, or upload a photo of your signature (the background is removed for you). Place it on the signature line and resize it.
Download or print
Click Download to save the filled PDF to your Downloads folder, or Print. Saving is always free.
Tips
- Made a mistake on a flat PDF? Use Whiteout to cover it, then type again.
- Flatten the form before sending it if you don't want anyone to change the answers.
Other ways to do it
Adobe Acrobat Reader also fills and signs PDFs for free on a desktop, but it's a separate app and some tools need a sign-in. Online PDF sites work too, but they upload your file and often limit free downloads.
Questions
Is the signature legally valid?
It's a simple electronic signature, which suits most everyday forms. For documents that need a certified digital signature or notarization, use the method the receiver asks for.
Do my PDFs get uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside Chrome on your computer.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Yes, enter the password when FairFill asks.
