How to take attendance in Google Meet automatically

Quick answer: Install the free RollCall extension in Chrome and join your Meet call. It records everyone who joins, with join time, minutes and rejoins. Open its side panel to check against your class list, then download a CSV or paste the table into Google Sheets.

Google Meet's own attendance reports are only available on some paid Google Workspace editions, and they arrive by email after the call. Teachers and tutors on other accounts usually end up taking screenshots of the participant list. An extension can do it while the call runs.

RollCall

Step by step

  1. Add RollCall to Chrome

Install RollCall from the Chrome Web Store. It's free with no account.

  2. Join your call as usual

RollCall starts recording by itself when you join a meeting on meet.google.com.

  3. Open the People panel once

Meet only shows some people as video tiles. Open Meet's People panel once so RollCall sees every name; it reminds you if it's closed.

  4. Check your class list

Click the RollCall icon to open its side panel, paste your roster once, and see who is present, late or absent, plus guests who aren't on the list.

  5. Export

Download a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets, or copy a table that pastes straight into Sheets. You can also have a CSV saved automatically when each call ends.

Tips

Other ways to do it

If your school has a Workspace edition with Meet attendance tracking, the host gets an attendance report by email after each meeting. Google Forms sign-in sheets work too, but students have to fill them in.
